About Joan Doglio Smith
Joan is a native Californian who has lived in Austin with her husband and three children since 2002.
After moving to Austin, Joan worked at the Austin Area Birthing Center where she held many administrative positions. They include Clinical Director, Staff Educator, Centering Pregnancy Director, and Student Supervisor. In addition, Joan holds the distinction of having been the longest tenured Staff Midwife at the center.
Joan was the first Certified Nurse Midwife in the Austin area to obtain hospital privileges at St David's Medical Center.
She also has them at Seton Medical Center.
Joan has twenty-three years of faculty experience in Nurse-Midwifery and Nursing. She is currently a preceptor for the Association of Texas Midwives (ATM), the North American Registry of Midwives (NARM), the National College of Midwifery, the University of Cincinnati, Frontier Nursing University, Georgetown University, and Baylor University School of Nursing.
What is a Preceptor?
Preceptors bridge theoretical learning and clinical practice to guide students in meeting clinical objectives and delivering safe, quality care. They educate students through observation and instruction, training them to become midwives.
Education & Certifications
She earned a Masters Degree in Nursing from UC San Francisco (1994-1996), and a specialization in nurse-midwifery and OB/GYN nurse practitioner from UC-San Diego School of Medicine (1995-1996).
