Can Iron Deficiency in Pregnancy Affect Baby Growth?


Yes, low iron in pregnancy is a risk for you and your baby. This is because your body needs more iron to produce the extra hemoglobin required to carry oxygen to both of you. As a result, your blood volume increases significantly during pregnancy especially between weeks 24 and 28.



What are the Symptoms of Low Iron in Pregnancy?


A common symptom of low iron in pregnancy is anemia which can leave you feeling weak and fatigued. If this occurs it will also increase your risk of complications during both pregnancy and delivery. In addition, not having enough iron can expose you to other risks. Since your baby needs iron, too, they'll draw it from your body, particularly your bones. This can leave you depleted and more susceptible to health issues.



What are Foods High in Iron for Pregnancy?


To avoid low iron in pregnancy include iron-rich foods in your diet. These include red meat, poultry, fish, beans, lentils, and fortified cereals. You should also indulge in leafy green vegetables such as spinach, kale, and swiss chard. They're rich in both iron and other essential nutrients. In addition, ensure you're getting enough protein from eggs, nuts, seeds, and dairy products. This will help you absorb iron more effectively. If your diet isn’t enough or you’re at risk for anemia, consider taking an iron supplement.



When Should I Check my Iron Levels?


Check your iron levels as your pregnancy begins and again during weeks 24 to 28 when blood volume increases. This will ensure that you and your baby are getting the necessary nutrients for healthy growth and development.
